Accomplishments

  • Established in the early 1990”s.
  • Water quality testing in coordination with Hamilton County Soil & Water since the early 2000’s.
  • Since 2003, sponsors the Regatta, now known as Paddling Olympics (see Events Calendar for more details).
  •  Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Program established in 2008 and continues now in its 15th year (see detail) through generous donations to the LLA, grants, and Town of Long Lake support, in collaboration with Adirondack Watershed Institute (AWI) and Watershed Steward Program (WSP) of Paul Smith’s College, the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program (APIPP), the Nature Conservancy, NYS DEC, and others. 
    • Note, grant and Town of Long Lake money awarded to Long Lake is also awarded to Raquette Lake.  Total allocated to date from Town of Long Lake has been $53, 250, including matching grant funds.
  • Partner with the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation to conduct Annual Loon Census on Long Lake.
  • Since 2017, participates in  the Adirondack Lake Assessment Program (ALAP) to ensure long-term water quality.
  • Represents Long Lake at the  Adirondack Lakes Alliance, Inc. and the  NYS Federation of Lake Associations, Inc.
  • In collaboration with the Lake Champlain Lake George Regional Planning Board, with funding assistance from NYSDEC through the Environmental Protection Fund produced:
    • The Long Lake Homeowners Guide to a Healthy Lake (2020) - Information includes:
      • Shoreline Buffers & Landscaping
      • Aquatic Invasive Species
      • Harmful Algal Blooms
      • Water Conservation
      • Septic Maintenance
      • Stormwater
    • The Long Lake Management Plan (2021) ​

Long Lake’s Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Prevention Program 

  • 2003—2015—LLA volunteers survey Long Lake for AIS (primary focus Eurasian Water Milfoil) and participate in various programs sponsored by the AWI of Paul Smith’s College and the APIPP. 
    • No Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM) found. 
    • Variable-Leaf Watermilfoil (VLM) present but not expanding.
  •  2009—NYS DEC adds VLM to AIS of concern.
  •  2008—LLA Eurasian Water Milfoil Project Committee established and awareness campaign established.  Now LLA AIS Prevention Program.
  • 2008—Present—Lake Steward Program established at the Long Lake DEC Boat Launch.  Lake Eaton and Forked Lake added in subsequent years.
  •  2008—Stewarding at Long Lake began  as a combined effort between the  LLA , the Town of Long Lake,  and a state grant designated by New York State Senator Betty Little.
  • 2009 and 2010  - The Lake Steward position was funded solely through the LLA and the Town of Long Lake.
  • 2011 and 2012  - Funding provided  through a Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Grant awarded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (2011) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (2012).
  • 2015—Comprehensive aquatic invasive plant survey conducted by APIPP, including GPS locations of all VLM.  No other AIS found.
  • 2016—AWI sponsors Boat Wash Station on Rt. 30, Long Lake.
  • ·2017—WSI offers NYS DEC funding to Long Lake to conduct hand harvesting of VLM for 6 weeks.
  • 2018—VLM hand harvesting continues for another 10 weeks.
  • 2018—AWI and NYS  DEC sponsored Boat Wash Station at new Municipal Parking Lot in Long Lake on Rt. 30.  LLA and Town of Long Lake purchase storage shed to support program.
  • NYS DEC Funding from 2019-2023 for 5 days coverage of DEC boat launch, Lake Eaton, and Forked Lake, but may need additional  funds to cover 2 additional days per lake. 
  • Funding after 2023 may continue through NYS DEC grants, but no guarantee.
  • 2019- - VLM hand harvesting for prevention for up to 4 weeks.
  • 2020—onwards— Establish long-range AIS Prevention Program to include:
  • Boat inspections  per summer season (15 weeks) have increased from 1258 in 2008 to over 2600.
