Dear Long Laker, We need your support! The Long Lake Association encourages your financial support now! Our mission is to preserve and enhance the health and beauty of the lake and to promote its wise use for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations.
Lakes in the Adirondack Park are under threat from a range of Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS). A neighboring lake has spent $1.5M (initial clean up) and approximately $200K every year since dealing with Eurasian milfoil and Variable Leaf Watermilfoil (VLM). Infestations from AIS can ruin fishing, swimming, motor boating and paddling; as well as potentially lowering property values. Many of the AIS cannot be completely eradicated and need regular control measures to keep them contained. In Long Lake, we only have Variable Leaf Watermilfoil (VLM) beds that need to be controlled.
The health and beauty of Long Lake is the cornerstone of our community and the many visitors that we share the lake with every year. The cost of monitoring water quality and surveying existing VLM beds are a small fraction of what it takes for eradication efforts to control the VLM already in our lake.
Since the summer of 2008, the Long Lake Association has sponsored a Lake Steward Program with generous financial and volunteer support from Long Lake residents, in collaboration with and support from the Town of Long Lake, Paul Smith’s College, NYS DEC, the Nature Conservancy, the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program and state and federal grants. The primary source of the Lake Steward Program funding is now provided by the NYS DEC.
Aquatic Invasive Species too often come in the back door, when no one is watching. Daily lake steward inspections are essential to prevent new AIS entry to our lake. A local Boat Wash Station is available throughout the season for boat decontamination.
We will continue to pursue grant funding from all sources available, as well as work closely with the Town, but our current sources of funding do not begin to cover the remediation costs to control VLM. Your contributions are needed to support our remediation efforts.
